1st Annual Son Jarocho Festival

August 16-19, 2013 

featuring the bands: Sistema Bomb, Quetzal, Pa Sumecha and Los Cojolites

The festival brings together important bands from the Veracruz region of Mexico playing their traditional folk music and US based fusion groups who draw upon the Son Jarocho style for inspiration. Complete with film screenings, concerts, collaborations and talleres, and community fandangos, the SF Son Jarocho Festival is open to anyone interested in the folk traditions of Veracruz or new music inspired by those traditions.

Thursday's events include celebrated filmmaker Marco Villalobos documentary "Son Siglos" which follows the struggles of 3 young Son Jarocho musicians from southern Veracruz.

Friday will feature a concert by "Quetzal", renowned musical embassadors from East L.A. with their unique brand of Jarocho-rock music and "Pa' Sumecha", a graceful and mellifluous trio.

Saturday's concert will feature "Sistema Bomb", a unique blend of electronic dance music with the traditional son of Veracruz plus "Los Cojolites", representatives of the next generation of Son Jarocho musicians in Southern Veracruz.

Sunday will be devoted to talleres and workshops with Son Jarocho masters in a variety of fields that will be held in and around the Brava Theater.

"This month San Francisco will play host to Jaraneros from across the continent, whose music represents old and new takes on a sound with roots deeply embedded in Mexican history. The Mission’s own historic Brava Theater will be the setting for San Francisco’s first annual Son Jarocho Festival, starting Aug. 16.
