Design Cycle: Urban Prototyping presented by Rebar

On a Wednesday in 2005, Matthew Passmore and his Design Studio, Rebar, converted a single parking space into a public park. Today “parklets” dot streets around the world and have changed the way we think about public space. Rebar continues to challenge how we engage with civic space through Urban Prototyping, an emerging movement that makes city design more innovative, collaborative and immediate.

Come Early.

At 6pm the urban proto-parklet-party begins. A parklet will be built for the night with bubbleware, a modular music stage, bicycle powered food and more. Open to all.
At 7pm Matthew takes the stage at the beautiful Brava Theater Center to present urban prototyping and the innovative ways Rebar continues to challenge our engagement with civic space.

About the presenters:

Matthew Passmore is an artist, urban explorer and public space advocate. He currently directs Rebar’s public art program. As a founder and principal at Rebar, Matthew initiated the first Rebar project, the Cabinet National Library, in 2004. He has generated the concepts for other well-known Rebar projects, including PARK(ing) Day, Street Life and EnCanment. He lectures at venues around the globe on the role of artistic experimentation in improving the quality of the public realm.
