Chavalo presents ‘El Güegüense’ y Noche Cultural

Sunday | October 2 | 5pm

$20

El Gueguense is a satirical theatrical play that dates back to the colonial-era in meso America. It is the most distinctive theatrical performance from Nicaragua that combines folkloric music, dance, and theater. The dancers wear elaborate wardrobes and wooden masks representing 14 key roles in the storyline. The name drives from 'huehue' which means wise old man in the native language 'nault'.

This will be our 6th year consecutively presenting El Gueguense here in San Francisco. We have brought Orlando Lopez, a renowned and award-winning choreographer, folklore and ballet dancer from Nicaragua to direct the entire production. Adding to the night, we will have local dancers from our own organization dancing folklore as well as from Nicaragua, Ballet Tradiciones de Nicaragua. We will also have live marimba directly from Nicaragua, Flor de Pino, a group who is accustomed to playing at events like these in el Teatro de Ruben Dario in Managua.

Please join us as we bring this educational play to life, with live marimba and folklore dancing it will be a night to remember.
