MABAGWE: Los Rumberos de la Bahía present Tribute to the Elders
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 20 – 8PM
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 21 – 8PM
Los Rumberos de la Bahia is a San Francisco-based rumba/folklore group led by Michael Spiro and Jose Luis Gomez. This concert celebrates the success of their 2019 CD Mabagwe which was nominated for Cuba's prestigious CUBADISCO "Tradición Afrocubana" award.
The concert features special guest Ernesto "Gato" Gatell (formerly of Clave y Guaguancó and Los Rumberos de Cuba), with a broad spectrum of today's Bay Area-based rumberos (musicians and dancers) including Michael Spiro, José Luis Gómez, Jesus Díaz, Fito Reinoso, José Francisco Barroso, Roberto Borrell, Yenne Guibert, Camilo Landau, Yoel Mulen, Gabriel Navia, Sandy Pérez, Genesie Reinoso and Remi Spiro.
As the title indicates, Mabagwe (“Remembrance” in Yoruba) honors legendary Cuban rumberos – including Regino Jimenez Saez (“Omi Saide”), Esteban Vega Bacallao (“Cha-Cha”), Gregorio Hernández, Juan de Dios Ramos, Francisco Hernández Mora, Gregorio Díaz, Jesus Alfonso, Julito Collazo, Manuel Suarez, Francisco Aguabella, and Pedro Aballí – all of whom had a fundamental impact on the Bay Area scene.
