 ABOUT FABIOLA SANTIAGO

IMG_8530.jpg

Fabiola Santiago is originally from Oaxaca, Mexico, and came to California as a child. As an undocumented teenager, she experienced the trauma of seeing her mother and father deported. Despite the limitations she faced due to her immigration status, Fabiola obtained a bachelor’s degree in sociology and a master’s in public health from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA).  The educational system wasn’t her only challenge; she also suffered sexual abuse and harassment.

Her blood bears the legacy of her grandmother, a mezcalera who taught her that mezcal is more than a trendy drink: It is identity, it possesses medicinal properties.

At a time when Oaxacan food has entered the spotlight of world cuisine, this young mother knows that a culinary revolution is needed. She has decided to embrace her roots and her enjoyment of cooking by hosting community meals in the Bay Area, where she offers traditional Oaxacan dishes, each with stories and scents that trigger memories. The smoke from her comal restores her community’s palate.

This promises to be a conversation where words evoke aromas and flavors.

Indómitas is a live podcast series hosted by Chelis López of KPOO and Radio Bilingüe, featuring interviews with fierce women artists and activists

Each month in Brava’s Cabaret, Indómitas will interview female singers, writers, poets, activists, artists, journalists, filmmakers, and others – some well-known and some deserving to be – for live broadcast. These 60-minute conversations will cover the women’s stories of achievement, pitfalls, and hopes for their futures.

Be ready for open and honest conversations, where intimacy fosters the sharing of joy, fear, acceptance, and ultimately, the strength of women. It’s our time to be the ones who narrate our stories of who we are, what we do, what matters to us and how we organized and stand up for our rights.

Indómitas Podcast Series will be available through Chelis López’ website, and other platforms.
