Indómitas is a live monthly podcast series hosted by Chelis López of KPOO and Radio Bilingüe, featuring untamable voices of fierce women artists and activists. For the March 2020 podcast, Indómitas will interview writer, film director, and producer Lourdes Portillo.
This is a FREE community event (though donations are happily accepted). Please note that the live podcast will be conducted in Spanish.
ABOUT LOURDES PORTILLO
Born in Chihuahua, Mexico, but raised in Los Angeles, Portillo studied at the San Francisco Art Institute where she graduated with an MFA in 1985. Portillo’s films have been described as “nuanced” and versed in a point of view balanced by her intersectional identity and experiences as a lesbian and a Chicana.
Portillo’s 1986 film Las Madres: The Mothers of Plaza de Mayo, which she co-produced with the Argentinian director Susana Blaustein Muñoz, and which documented the weekly gatherings of the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo (a group of Argentine women whose children were murdered – or “disappeared” – by the military regime), received an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary in 1987.
In her 2001 follow up film, Señorita Extraviada, Portillo addressed the issue of the femicides in Ciudad Juárez, México. The film went on to win numerous awards such as the Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, the Best Documentary at the Havana International Film Festival, the Nestor Almendros Award at the Human Rights Watch Film Festival, and the Ariel, the Mexican Academy of Film Award.

Lourdes Portillo es escritora, directora y productora de cine nacida en Chihuahua, México, y criada en Los Ángeles.
Posee una maestría en Bellas Artes del Instituto de Arte de San Francisco.
Las perspectivas políticas de sus películas han sido descritas como "matizadas" y versadas con un punto de vista equilibrado por su experiencia como mujer lesbiana y chicana.
Entre sus películas están Las Madres: Las madres de la Plaza de Mayo, una coproducción de 1986 con la directora argentina Susana Blaustein Muñoz que documentó las acciones de Madres de la Plaza de Mayo, un grupo de mujeres argentinas que se reúnen semanalmente en la Plaza de Mayo en Buenos Aires para recordar a sus hijos que fueron asesinados o "desaparecidos" por el régimen militar.
Este trabajo recibió una nominación al Premio de la Academia en 1987 como Mejor Documental.
En el 2001 Lourdes abordó el asunto de los feminicidios en Ciudad Juárez en "Señorita Extraviada".
Sus películas han ganado numerosos premios. "Señorita Extraviada" recibió un Premio Especial del Jurado en el Festival de Cine de Sundance y también el Mejor Documental en el Festival Internacional de Cine de La Habana, el Premio Nestor Almendros en el Festival de Cine de Human Rights Watch y el Ariel, el Premio de la Academia Mexicana de Cine.
