One Non Binary Show by Mervin Primeaux-OBryant

Hosted by Antoine Hunter, Urban Jazz Dance Company presents Take Back My Power featuring Mervin Primeaux OBryant, a non-binary Black Deaf artist, dancer, international performer, activist, and HIV survivor from the deep southern town of Lafayette, Louisiana who has performed vignettes of Mervins life journey in the heart of Washington D.C and around the world. Take Back My Power exhibits Mervins creative, passionate, and flowery lotus brilliance, unique worldview and reflects his commitment to push back against the status quo. Mervin will share his story through dance, monologue, and ASL song performances. The show calls for healing and self-transformation. Take Back My Power, encourages creative equity, access, diversity, and inclusion. Like most of Mervins work, this show explores language, communication, and cultural barriers through sound and movement.

About the Artist

Mervin Primeaux-OBryant, a native of Lafayette, Louisiana, obtained his degree in Dance Performance & Choreography from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. He is an actor, director, producer, choreographer, international performer, and advocate. Honored with a Wavy Award, he is the Co-Founder of Def Lens Media, serves on the board and manages the Mervin Primeaux-OBryant Foundation and is producing a feature documentary. His creative journey has blessed him with many experiences; including being assistant director for Quest Visual Theatre and serving as an American Sign Language consultant in theatre and music videos. In 2021, he performed to a special of Gladys Knight & The Pips Midnight Train to Georgia called Midnight Moment which is the worlds largest, longest-running digital art exhibition, synchronized on 75 billboard screens of Times Square nightly for 2 months from 11:57 pm to midnight.
