Brava and BACCE present So Soul San Francisco: Black Art Salon Series

High Crimes and Misdemeanors: An explosion of theatrical mayhem

THURSDAY, MAY 17 – 7PM

Members of BACCE.

Members of BACCE.

Join BACCE and friends as we eat, drink, party and explore theatrical texts that have been banned or deemed difficult, dangerous or highly controversial. Centered around excerpts from Robert O’Hara’s prescient political satire, An American Ma(u)l (to be produced by BACCE at Brava this fall), the evening will include scenes and text from other dangerous plays and playwrights including works by the late Congolese writer Sony Labou Tansi, Thomas Bradshaw (Tommy and Sally), Wole Soyinka, and excerpts from the play, Homegrown by Omar El Khairy which was banned in the UK in 2016.

We invite you to join the discussion on theatre and controversy, as we examine: What is controversy in theatre now versus in the past? What does race and ethnicity have to do with what is deemed difficult or dangerous? how does who is in the audience change what is allowed? And questions you may have surrounding theatre and censorship.

Discussion will be surrounded and encouraged by food, drink and a live DJ!

ABOUT
BACCE commemorates, celebrates and cultivates the phenomenal Black Art scene in San Francisco as we take over the brand new Brava cabaret storefront space with So Soul San Francisco: Black Art Salons. In the tradition of our forerunner – the legendary Sugar Shack Performance Gallery – BACCE unleashes Black Art in a series of storefront performances, food, fun and fashion on third Thursdays in 2018. We will hold space for new performances and conversations in the casual setting of art salon. With fabulous guest hosts and loads of fun and surprises, we are inviting the community to enjoy and share the tremendous artistic output of some of the Bay Area’s established and upcoming artists.
