Explore the folkloric music style of Veracruz, Mexico, during a two-day virtual festival of music, workshops, and conversations, when Brava presents the 9th Annual San Francisco Son Jarocho Festival.

Ariles y más Ariles: An Evening with César Castro Live in Conversation with Chelis López

Join KPOO’s Chelis Lopez for a conversation with young son jarocho master César Castro. Please note that the event will be presented mostly in Spanish and is free to the community.

SATURDAY, APRIL 24
Master Workshops

Come learn with the masters in a series of virtual son jarocho workshops, including zapateado (percussive footwork) with Xochi Flores and Violeta Romero, jarana with Maria de la Rosa and Chuy Sandoval, leona with Laura Rebolloso, and requinto with César Castro. Workshops are one hour long and are free to the public. 

10:00 am PST – Beginning Jarana with Maria de la Rosa
10:00 am PST – Beginning Zapateado with Xochi Flores
11:30am PST – Advanced Jarana with Chuy Sandoval 
11:30am PST – Intermediate-Advanced Zapateado with Violeta Romero
1:00pm PST – Leona with Laura Rebolloso
1:00pm PST – Requinto with César Castro

The workshops are virtual and being offered for FREE, though registration is required. All donations made at the time of registration will go to support the festival and the artists involved.


SATURDAY, APRIL 24
Virtual Concert

We are excited to bring you some of the most accomplished and experimental musicians in Son Jarocho today when we present the 9th annual San Francisco Son Jarocho Festival. The concert features musicians from Mexico, Los Angeles, and right here in the Bay Area, all coming to you for one evening only of virtual entertainment. Acts include La Familia Vega from Tlacotalpan, Veracruz; Matombe; Mono Blanco; and the East Los Angeles based Chicano-Jarocho group Cambalache, led by César Castro. Opening this spectacular show is Brava Son, featuring Bay Area musicians Arwen Lawrence, Ayla Davila, Cassandra Millspaugh, Kyla Danysh, Dolores Garcia, Maria de la Rosa, and Miguel Govea as Rehearsal Director.

7:00pm – 9:00pm PST (virtual performance)

Tickets: $17 (with no additional fees)
